The deadly collapse of the Champlain Towers condominium in Surfside, Florida last summer was a tragic reminder of how vital it is for community administrators to be informed and proactive when it comes to the physical maintenance of their properties. Deferring maintenance and repair work may be tempting in the short run to save money or avoid an unpopular assessment, but the Surfside disaster demonstrates what can happen when crucial projects are put off for too long.
