Years ago, our co-op switched the common-area light bulbs from incandescent to CFL, which cut the electric bill a tiny bit, but increased overall maintenance/operating costs, because the CLF bulbs burned out often and had to be replaced. About 2 years ago, we switched from CFL to LEDs, and it has been amazing. We bought the bulbs at a reduced price from ConEd. Our electric bill fell by about 20%. And I don't think we have had a burned out bulb since installation 2 years ago.
